What is a Funky Mama?

by Editor on April 21, 2008

Ok, in our first couple of issues we talked a little about self-maintenance and the importance of putting ourselves first.  But, let’s take a step back and address what being a “funky mama” is all about.

A funky mama is more about a state of mind than an outward appearance.  The funky mama is our modern day version of the Proverbs 31 woman (Proverbs 31: 1-31).  This woman was phenomenal!

She managed her household, took great care of her family, kept herself looking well, invested in business and real estate, helped those in need, and always had faithful instruction on her tongue.  This woman didn’t have to seek respect; she commanded it!

The purpose of One Funky Mama is to remind moms to not step back or step down in our households or in life.  Many of us are familiar with the famous quote by Marianne Williamson, “…You are a child of God.  Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel unsure around you.  We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone…”

This quote is especially true for moms, we often shrink back to allow others to shine.  Oprah coined the term women who’ve “let themselves go”.  Yeah, that holds so true for us.  We stay in “comfortable” (a nice word for dowdy) clothes, don’t keep our hair done as much anymore, and don’t even ask us about maintaining anything else!

But, it’s about so much more than just keeping our look together.  It’s about choosing to value ourselves enough to care about our total well-being.  And, that means re-introducing ourselves to self-care and wellness, as well as, re-igniting our passion for life.  This is the only life journey we get, so doesn’t it make sense to make the most of it?

The sole purpose of One Funky Mama is to help us get in touch with the woman that God created us to be.  Despite being mothers, along with our myriad of other roles, we were first born Pam, Donna, Latysha, or Lynn.  Let’s reintroduce ourselves and take the time to show us that we are appreciative…of us!

No matter what, know that you’re here and you have soooo much value.  Feel special, because you certainly are!
