Zumba?! Hot Yoga?!

A couple of girlfriends have recently introduced me to some new workout terms (new to me at least!). One was “hot yoga” and the other was “Zumba”. Now I know what yoga is and have even practiced it, but “hot” yoga? “What the heck is that?”
I asked Lisa who lives in West Palm Beach. She explained that it was a 90 minute yoga class done in a heated room (somewhere between 90 and 105?F) with about 40% humidity.
Now, I was having flashbacks to the yoga classes that I’ve participated in where I’m dripping with sweat and there is no heat. Who in the world would want to do that to themselves, or better yet, why in the world would they want to do that to themselves? Obviously, my best friend would! She was so enthusiastic about it:
“Oh Bridge (she calls me that), you’ve got to try it! Now I admit that during the first class I crawled out midway through and the instructor came out to check on me. I thought that I was going to die! But she talked me into going back in and taking the remainder of the class – it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done! I could feel the toxins leaving my body, I feel soooo relaxed after a class, and my complexion is clear and glowing – so much so that people have complimented me!”
And off she went to her next hot yoga class. She is now officially addicted to hot yoga and even has her 2 teen daughters, Adrianne and Autumn, taking the class with her. Toxins? Glowing complexion? Maybe she has something here…
“Zumba” first came to my attention when another friend of mine wrote on her Facebook page that she had just finished a class and loved it. “What’s Zumba?” I asked Lynn, who lives in Boston. “It’s a fabulous new Latin inspired aerobic dance and it’s so much fun! You’ve got to find one in your area!”

I love Latin dance so I made a mental note to check it out in the next few days. The very next day (less than a week ago) I met someone who mentioned that she was a Zumba instructor – here in Dallas. I asked her about the class and when she said that you could burn up to 500 calories in an hour, it was like “duh”. What the heck was I waiting for?
So, I’ve found the hot yoga class and a Zumba class. Will I crawl out sweating profusely on my hands and knees from either class? Probably so – but it will be worth it!
