Hold the Cellulite, Please!

by Editor on September 14, 2009

Our skin is our largest organ and plays a significant role in discharging impurities from our bodies. An obvious way for us to know our body is out of whack is by taking a look at our skin. Acne (face and body), splotchiness, uneven skin tone, skin rashes (eczema, psoriasis), and (the dreaded) cellulite tell us we need to get a better grip on our health.

While all of these conditions can be bothersome, cellulite is something the majority of women face. Cellulite is nothing more than a gel-like substance, which is filled with fat, water, and waste (toxins). It creates dimples and indentations on the surface of our skin.

In attempting to rid ourselves of these unsightly indentations, women will try the most expensive creams on the market, finding they’re more hype than helpful. So, what methods can we undertake, in addition to a healthy lifestyle, to help disperse the cellulite?

Dry Brushing

Dry Brushing is a method well-known in the alternative health community in aiding the lymphatic system to work better. It not only stimulates the skin and lymphatic system, it also works to detoxify the kidneys, liver, and lungs.

Dry brushing is nothing more than using a natural-bristle brush (like a back or hand brush) to stroke individual body parts, brushing towards the heart. For cellulite removal, you would brush fatty areas in a circular motion for a minute or two before proceeding to other body parts. Dry brushing should be completed before bathing.

When consistently done, dry brushing is known to quickly break down cellulite. For more information on this method, visit Natural Health Techniques.

Far Infrared (FIR) Saunas

Dr. Oz brought fir saunas to the public’s attention by discussing it on Oprah. FIR saunas use infrared heat, which can be directly absorbed into the human body. Traditional saunas use steam or hot air to heat the body. Infrared saunas are considered a better option because infrared heat is considered similar to the heat of the sun, but without the effects of harmful, ultraviolet rays.

If you’ve been in a sauna, you’ve witnessed the wonderful results. The induced sweating helps to release fluid and toxins trapped in the fat cells. Over time, this aids in diminishing the look of cellulite and in clearing your skin overall.

Far infrared saunas are an investment ($900 and up), but you can usually access them at wellness facilities throughout the country. Be aware that the sauna at your favorite spa or gym may not be an infrared sauna; so, always ask. But getting in a sauna, whether infrared or not, is better than not getting in one at all.

Removing cellulite can be as simple as adding a five-minute dry brushing session to your daily routine and spending 15-minutes in an infrared sauna twice a week. These techniques, coupled with being more considerate of your overall lifestyle, will turn you into a svelte, cellulite-free mama quicker than you think.  And, both of these methods are beneficial to your entire body, not just your fat stores.
