~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What were you doing before you launched your business?
I was a stay at home mom. While pregnant with my daughter, I had several complications which left me on bed rest for 20 weeks. I was put on steroids and other medications that left my body bloated and worn out. My muscles atrophied and I gained over 50lbs. My business grew out of a personal desire to reclaim my body!
Why did you decide to transition out of working for others?
I worked briefly at a gym and did an internship at a private studio. I realized that the only way I could stay true to my fitness philosophy was to create my own company. It is also very important to me to maintain balance in my life. Being able to create a work schedule that compliments my family life is essential.
What was the first step you took in taking your idea to reality?
I apprenticed with another fitness professional while I worked on my certification. I also started really working on my body inside and out. I wanted to make sure the advice I gave was based on knowledge and experience.
Were you afraid to step out on your own? If so, how did you overcome your fear?
Not really. I really just dove in. Once the business started to grow, the fear set in. I had to learn how to cut myself some slack. Rome was not built in a day and it was okay for me to allow myself time to develop into a savvy business woman.
Once you left your job, what did you do first?
I never really left my job! I just took on another one. I took my time. My family was used to having my undivided attention. I let the business grow at a manageable pace while we all adjusted to Mommy’s new venture.
Who were your first customers/clients?
My first clients were moms from my stay at home support group. We would meet (babies in tow) and have a small group session twice a week. It was a great way to get started.
What was your marketing strategy initially? How has it changed?
I relied almost 100% on word of mouth in the beginning. Personal training has a very specific target audience. I now try to make myself as familiar as possible in my community through a variety of PR and marketing strategies.
What advice would you give to others who are interested in launching a business similar to yours?
Don’t try to be all things to all people. Find your fitness niche and become an expert in that area.
What are the future goals for your business?
We are growing in new markets. We plan on offering more corporate solutions as well as expanding the in-home fitness experience to include things like yoga, triathlon training and personal chef services. We will also offer fitness experiences for our large web and readership audience including several ‘field trips’ designed to expose our clients to a variety of fitness experiences.
How do you juggle your business responsibilities with those of being a mother?
That is a constant challenge. I try to be ‘present’ with whatever I do. When I am working with a client, I do not answer the phone. When I am with my family, I put down the dumbbells!
What is an average day like for you?
I wake at 5:45 am and take my high schooler to school on my way to my 7:00 am client. Home by 8:15 am to get my two younger ones to school (Dad gets them ready). I see clients again from 9:15 to 1:00. I work on business development, marketing, and new trainer training on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 1:00. Once the kids come home, its homework and after school activities! I also workout everyday. Sometimes I meet a girlfriend for a walk to catch up. On the weekends I am 100% soccer mom!
How do you motivate yourself and stay motivated?
Promoting healthy lifestyles is at the core of who I am. When my clients reach a milestone or achieve success I am inspired. Being an example for my children also helps me stay focused. They are always watching!
If you had to start over from scratch, knowing what you know now, what would you differently?
I really do not believe in regrets or do-overs. All of my experiences have helped me to become who I am now. I wouldn’t change a thing!
What’s the most important business or financial discovery you’ve made in the past year?
Social Networking. It suits me and my business more than any other marketing resource. I love people. I really enjoy providing support and guidance in such a relaxed way.
What do you do to promote your business, to beat the competition, and to dominate the market?
I let the product speak for itself. As stated in the movie Field of Dreams “If you build it, they will come” has proven true for me. I feel that I offer top notch fitness professionals and unparalleled customer care. The result has been a wonderful group of committed clients.
What are the three threats to your business, your success, and how are you handling them?
The Economy: I am constantly looking for ways to offer quality services at competitive prices.
Competition: I stay focused on doing what I do well.
Lack of Consumer Knowledge: A large part of my business includes educating the general public on health and fitness related topics.
What has been your biggest disappointment in your life – and what are you doing to prevent its reoccurrence?
I don’t really see any of my experiences as disappointments. Its all lessons learned!
What do you observe most people in your field doing badly that you think you do well?
Personal training (or group fitness) is often a side ‘gig’ for many. This can lead to several unprofessional behaviors. Fitness is what I do. Not just as my job, but as a mother, a wife, and friend. I feel like it is an awesome opportunity to help someone reach their fitness goals. I take it very seriously.
