As you may or may not know, I’m a huge advocate of being in business for yourself. Of course, business ownership gives you much more flexibility and control over your life.

But, if you choose the right business, based on your personal objectives, your passions, and what is needed, then you also won’t have to worry about the ups and downs of the economy as much as you would if you were fearing a layoff due to your job cutting back.

Most people think starting a business is a fearful, crazy proposition. And, they say don’t even think about starting one during an economic downturn. However, these folks probably have never started a business.

The truth of the matter is many hugely successful businesses were created during bleak times. What was the thing that made these businesses flourish? They found a need and filled it.

And, did you know women are the main ones creating their own entrepreneurial paths right now? Make no mistake, women being in biz is definitely not something new. It’s not the new, cool thing to do.

Ever since the beginning of human existence on earth, women have used their creativity and know-how to provide economic stability for themselves and their families. Whether they did it through exchange (bartering) or used something of extreme value (gold, silver, silk, etc.) to get something they needed, women have always been entrepreneurs.

So, are you considering starting a biz? If so, now’s a perfect time to start. But, listen very carefully! You have to follow a few essential rules (in my opinion) to get started on the right foot. Take it from me, I’ve made so many mistakes in business that I’m becoming an expert =}. So, based on my experiences (the beautiful + the  horrendous), I’ve come up a with a list of things you should consider before launching a venture:

  1. Are you passionate about your proposed venture? If not, find something you are passionate about.
  2. Do you know enough about it? If not, spend a few days or a couple of weeks (that’s probably all you’ll need…seriously), learning all you can.
  3. Are others in need of (or do they seriously want) what you have to offer? Ask around and use the internet to research the need. If there’s no need, then start over.
  4. Can you potentially make a living with your venture? And, don’t just say yes. If no, then it’s not a business is it?

If your goal is to make a few hundred dollars a month or a few million dollars a year, asking yourself these very basic questions will help immensely in clarifying your focus, your goals, your potential, and your happiness in launching your venture.

Now, get launching!!!!
